Pay an invoice and add a tip

Last updated September 2026 · v1.0

When your provider bills you, the invoice shows up in Chester so you can see exactly what you're paying for and settle it in a tap. You can also leave a tip if your provider accepts them, and keep a card on file to make next time quicker.

The short version
  1. Open Payments to see your invoices.
  2. Tap an invoice to review it, then tap Pay.
  3. Finish on the secure Stripe checkout page, and add a tip there if you'd like.

On your phone

  1. From the bottom bar, tap the More tab, then under History tap Payments.
  2. If you owe anything, an Outstanding Balance card sits at the top with a Pay Now button (it reads Pay All with a count when you have more than one unpaid invoice). Below that, Billing History lists every invoice with a status like Unpaid, Overdue, or Paid.
  3. Tap any invoice to open it. You'll see what it covers, a breakdown (subtotal, any tax, any service fee), and the total.
  4. To add a tip, use the Add a tip section - pick a percentage, tap Custom to enter your own amount, or No tip. This only appears when your provider accepts tips.
  5. Tap the Pay button at the bottom. Chester opens a secure Stripe checkout page to take your card. When it's done, you're returned to the app and the invoice updates to Paid.
  6. Prefer a copy for your records? Tap PDF to download the invoice.

To save or change a card on your phone: on the More tab, under Account, tap Payment method, then Add a Credit Card (or Change payment method). To remove it, tap Remove Card on File. Your card is entered on Stripe's secure page, not stored by Chester.

On the web

  1. In the left sidebar, click Payments.
  2. Your invoices are listed on the left. On the right you'll see Total Paid and Outstanding totals, and a Pay balance button when you have something due.
  3. Click an invoice to open its full document. Review the line items and breakdown, and if your provider accepts tips, use the Add a tip row to choose a percentage or a custom amount.
  4. Click the Pay button. Chester sends you to a secure Stripe checkout page to finish. Use Download PDF if you want a saved copy.
  5. To manage your card, click the Payment method panel on the right (it opens /my/payments, then Payment Method), where you can Change Payment Method or Remove Card on File.

Good to know

  • Keeping a card on file is optional. It just makes paying quicker. You can add, change, or remove it anytime, and it takes effect right away.
  • Your card is handled by Stripe - Chester never sees your full card number.
  • Tips go 100% to your provider and are never subject to the Chester service fee.
  • A service fee may be added at checkout, depending on your provider. Your total is always shown before you pay.
  • If your provider isn't set up for online payments, you won't see a Pay button or a saved-card option. You can still open the invoice and download the PDF, and settle up with your provider directly.
  • Only the primary account holder can manage the saved card. If you're a household contact you can still pay invoices - checkout takes your card securely at payment time.
  • Partially paid invoices are settled with your provider directly rather than online, so reach out to them for the remaining balance.
