Roles and permissions explained

Last updated September 2026 · v1.0

Chester has three roles - owner, staff, and contractor. Owners can do everything; staff and contractors do the visits, with a few differences. As the owner, you can fine-tune what each role can do.

The short version
  1. Owner - full access to everything.
  2. Staff - run visits, message clients, and manage client records; can't touch billing, settings, or the team.
  3. Contractor - run visits, but not messaging or client records - they're engaged to do the work, not administer it.

What each role can do

  • Owner: everything - billing, business settings, services, the team, reports, and every visit.
  • Staff: create and cancel bookings, edit and add clients, message clients, and see their own pay. They can't manage billing, business settings, services, the team, or send announcements.
  • Contractor: create bookings and do their assigned visits. Unlike staff, a contractor can't cancel bookings, can't message clients directly, and can't manage client records - by design, they're there to perform visits, not run the office.

Fine-tuning permissions

As the owner, open Settings, then Role Permissions (on your phone or the web) to adjust exactly what staff and contractors can do, beyond these defaults.

Good to know

  • "Contact pet owners" is a real control. Turn a contractor's messaging off and they reach owners through you instead - useful when you want to keep the client relationship yours.
  • Only the owner can edit permissions.
